Pink Minnie Mouse Cake and Cupcakes

January 6th, 2012

This was a super cute cake and matching Minnie Mouse cupcakes for a first birthday that we did during the freak Halloween snowstorm. We even had to delay delivery a few times since the family didn’t have power lol. But happy little Zoey finally got her cake!

The cupcakes are chocolate and vanilla with chocolate butter cream and all of the garnishes are made of fondant. I honestly don’t remember what the small cake was lol. I think it was chocolate with vanilla chocolate chip buttercream. But either way it was cute! Happy Birthday Zoey! :)

Silver, Black & White Cupcake Wedding Cake

January 5th, 2012

Cupcake wedding cakes are on the rise. And we were thrilled we got to do this one for our first official gay wedding! The two grooms couldn’t have been nicer and wanted a simple color scheme of black, silver, and white. Simple but oh so elegant!

Each tier of cupcakes is a different flavor with a top cake for cutting. From top to bottom: top cake – chocolate cake with vanilla chocolate chip buttercream, pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese buttercream, vanilla cupcakes with mocha buttercream, and chocolate cupcakes with white mint frosting. All the cupcake decorations are fondant with hand piped initials. The top cake has fondant and royal icing decor with a matching silver ribbon.

Congrats to the happy couple! :)

Nutella Cupcakes

January 4th, 2012

I’ve been obsessed with Nutella lately. I bought the large tub at costco for a cake order, and it’s been downhill from there lol. Did i mention it’s really good in a little bowl mixed with graham cracker crumbs and melted marshmallows….that’s my latest guilty pleasure snack….omg it’s amazing….hehe.

Anywho, i digress…. leftover nutella. So my college roommate had a baby over the summer (and omg he’s the cutest thing ever!!!). Of course, being me i had to bring over a plethora o baked goodies. In addition to the Baby Boy brownies i made a bunch of assorted cupcakes. And my college roommate is like me, totally italian. So as two italian girls i thought what would be better  than a nutella cupcake!!! I also brought over a hunk of fresh mozzarella and prosciutto cause hey you have to have the salty with the sweet.

The nutella cupcake is our regular chocolate cupcake, filled with nutella, vanilla buttercream, and then drizzled with more nutella and hazelnuts. I think next time i would mix some of the nutella in with the buttercream as well, but it was still delicious. It also got 2 thumbs up from the new parents!  They were a hit at the middle of the night feedings (for the new parents lol). Oh the wonders of nutella! There will be so more of these to come! :) And more nutella treats! :)

Village Pourhouse Cake

January 3rd, 2012

We were thrilled when the Village Pour House Bar asked us to make not one, but 2 anniversary cakes for them! One was for the 5th anniversary of their downtown location in NYC, and the other one was to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of their new location in Hoboken. They asked us to incorporate their colors of cherry red and gold, and since they are a sports bar, we went with logos of their beers on tap for the bottom, and some of our favorite NY sports teams on top, with their signature logo in the middle.

The bottom and top layers were yellow cake with chocolate buttercream, and the middle layer was (my new favorite!) chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream swirled with lots of nutella!!! All of the logos were made with our edible ink printer, and the logo in the middle is fondant and the rest is hand piped. We used some fabulous luster dust and spray food coloring to get the right effect.

Happy Anniversary Village Pourhouse!! Here’s to many more awesome years! :)

Lady Gaga Cupcakes!

November 23rd, 2011

YAY for GAGA CUPCAKES!!! omg I’ve had these in my head for a while. I think over the summer when i was doing a zillion kids cakes (which don’t get me wrong, i love), i just wanted to do something fun and just for me and a little bit edgy and different. And as we all know i LOVE and am slightly obsessed with Lady Gaga (b/c she’s FABULOUS and her music kicks ass! and she also stands up for all those of us who were always “different” in one way or another, i just love her…hehe). So the wheels have been turning since then, i think i even sketched stuff on the beach on vacation as way to relax…lol. The Judas cupcake was my dad’s idea, he’s a big Gaga fan as well, love it!

And those of you who know me, know that i very often rock out to Lady Gaga in the wee hours while cake decorating (i like to call it the late night “Gaga Power hour” which usually turns into like 3 hours or more lol), and in the non wee hours as well.  Even all of my interns and truffle elves now know all of her songs as part of my totally random iPod baking mix we listen to at the kitchen…hehehe. She’s always in there mixed with the 80s cheese ball pop & rock, billy joel & elton john, 70s old school rock, show tunes, 90grunge, current stuff, and even some holiday music in december (even Christmas Tree!!  lol :) .

So when i decided to give myself a last minute birthday present and go to the book signing in NYC this week, the girls online while we waited to pre order were like, you should totally bring them for her. So i thought hey why not. And it made me get all my Thanksgiving orders done early…lol. So here we are.

The signing was awesome! (minus the waiting in the rain for 3 hours part, but she ordered crumbs cupcakes for everyone waiting online). And she was so super sweet! I left the cupcakes in the pile o gifts, so i have no clue if she’ll see them before they get crushed. But either way i had a ball making them (i thoroughly enjoyed chasing the hubby around with the monster  gaga hand, singing various gaga songs at him, and to his credit as a great hubby he sang along lol). AND i got to meet GAGA! She was super nice. It was my first time meeting her and i totally turned into a 12 year old girl and was maybe able to stutter a few things and told her i listen to her when i cake decorate late at night.  And she said i was sweet. Now i’m sure called a lot of us sweet, but it still made me smile. And there will so be gaga cupcakes part 2 post holidays, i have a zillion more ideas!

Check out the pics below for more pics of GAGA cupcake fun and the process and meaning behind them. And Monsters  you can follow me at my lil monster account @sugarNspice80 for fun gaga related tweets. Enjoy! Paws up forever! :)

Body parts and fondant decors in progress :)

“Born This way” “slime/afterbirth”

I’m kinda obsessed with the goo from the video. LOVE IT! And i’ve been dying to make it a cupcake…lol. All the body parts are made of fondant, and the goo is colored piping gel. Chocolate cupcake with purple tinted vanilla buttercream. back view below, i love the little butt in the righthand lower corner…hehe.  And i kind of love that the cupcake on the whole, it’s not super pretty, or your traditionally cute cupcake, it’s just raw and gooey but still gets the point across. And yes monsters, i realize i got the wrong hand, but that’s what happens when you fondant at 3am lol.

Jud-as, Jud-ah-as, Judas, Jud-ah-as!!!

Made of fondant and piped with red royal icing dots to get the look of  studded leather. Chocolate cupcake with tinted red vanilla buttercream. At one point it was going to be a leather jacket, but i thought this worked better and had more room for the lettering.

“I’m gonna lace up my boots…”

The boots are made of fondant with piped black royal icing laces. Then painted with luster dust to simulate the fun hardware on her boots. These are modeled after the ones she wore in the Monster Ball, and she also wears them all over the place, not the LeBoutins, these are just the regular ones :)

“Rainbow syrup in her heart that she bleeds…” – Highway Unicorn

For some reason this lyric stuck out to me from the first time i heard the song, i just love it. And this was the first cupcake i was definite on from the beginning. The heart is an anatomical heart (ish) made of fondant and brushed with red piping gel to make it look real and gooey. I didn’t want your typical regular heart, i thought a real heart 1- is way more Gaga and 2- would look cool. And i put some holes in the heart to show that we all have holes in our heart, but a rainbow can still come out of it! And the rainbow is also made of fondant. Pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese buttercream with pink disco dust on top, of course.

“Marry the Night”

Love this song! Kind of a literal interpretation of the song. It’s a little NYC cityscape made out of fondant, piped royal icing “windows”, brushed with luster dust. The lips are pink fondant, brushed with red piping gel and sparkled with disco dust. The little car “ginger” gaga’s old car, is made of fondant.  Pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese buttercream with pink disco dust on top. UPDATE: there will so be a Marry the night part 2 now that the video has come out!! Can’t wait! :)

Jameson, “My whisky is the only thing i do straight” – Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga loves her Jameson whisky so i of course had to do a jameson cupcake! I’ve had a lot of practice with other alcohol bottles (the jack daniels cake, ketchup bottle, etc). The bottle is made of fondant and painted with luster dust and even edible label. The whisky “neat” is also made of fondant and painted with luster dust and drawn with edible ink markers. Chocolate cupcake with purple tinted vanilla buttercream.

Schiebe!!!!

This is one of my favorite songs. It’s all about being a strong woman and not taking sh*t from anyone, literally :) .  Schibe (pronounced shie-sa, means “sh*t in German…hehe) So this is my girl power breaking through from below cupcake. The female symbol is made of fondant with edible market writing, bursting out of a fondant hole, filled with yellow sanding sugar. Chocolate cupcake with purple vanilla tinted buttercream. I’m not totally happy with this one, so i think there may be a Schibe part 2 as well.

Me and GAGA!!! how cute are we!!?? :)

November 23rd, 2011

We were super thrilled to participate in our first Queens Uncorked at the Foundry in Long Island City hosted by the fabulous Edible Queens Magazine. It was a great event with many delicious samplings from local queens restaurants, food artisans, as well as wine tastings from over 15 Long Island Wineries.  Toward the end we had nothing left! It was great meeting all the local foodies as well as tasting lots of amazingly delicious food. A special shout out to Edible Queens for hosting such an amazing event! :)

October Baker’s Tip

October 6th, 2011

It’s Fall! And that means time for apples and pumpkin! Here’s one of my favorite tips for a quick and super delicious alternative topping for apple pie. Make your apple pie as you usually do, then instead of putting a pie dough crust on top,  use crumb topping instead!!!  Check out the recipe below, you can pile it on as much as you want (if this is me there is usually ALOT hehe, in pastry school i was known as the crumb topping girl lol) and bake as you usually would. It’s simple to make and super quick and easy. Enjoy! :)

CRUMB TOPPING

2 Sticks butter (1/2#)

4 oz brown sugar

4 oz granulated sugar

3/4 tsp cinnamon

12 oz AP flour

1. melt butter and cool

2. combine remaining ingredients and stir in rest of ingredients

3. break into crumbs with hands, apply to pie, and bake as usual

You can check out the info here. They left what to make up to us, so we came up with these. Rainbow DD brownies and our bride and groom brownie pops. You can see the brownie process below, they were rainbow in side and out! :) We had a blast and so good our chocolatey treats can help with a great cause!! :)
